白日 [Hakujitsu]
King Gnu [Kingu Nū]
Words & Music : 常田大希 [TSUNETA Daiki]
King Gnu is a four-member band centered around Daiki Tsuneta. Tsuneta studied cello at Tokyo University of the Arts and has a fascinating background, including his family. He is also involved in a project called Millennium Parade, each with its own concept. With King Gnu, however, the concept seems to be incorporating various genres while producing J-pop.
“Hakujitsu” was created as the theme song for the TV drama Innocence: Enzai Bengoshi, which tells the story of a lawyer tackling wrongful convictions. The lyrics were written in line with the theme of the drama.
- 白(しろ) [shiro] : white
Let me explain the title. “白日 / hakujitsu” is a word composed of the kanji “白 / shiro” (=white) and “日 / hi” (=day). It refers to a bright, shining sun or daytime. The idiom “白日の元に晒す / hakujitsu no moto ni sarasu” (=to expose under broad daylight) means to reveal something hidden to the public.

The word “潔白 / keppaku” exists, meaning a state where one’s heart and actions are just. A lawyer’s job is to prove that the defendant is “潔白 / keppaku” (innocent). Both the title “白日 / hakujitsu” and “潔白 / keppaku” contain the kanji “白 / shiro” (=white), emphasizing themes of purity and truth. The phrase “pure white snow” also enhances the visual imagery.

In the music video, the visuals are consistently in black and white, likely to emphasize the concept of “white.”
